75 Years of ALFRED TALKE: On to Kalscheuren 1968 - 1975

By the end of the 1960s, the Rhineland has finally developed into a chemical region. Like its numerous customers in the chemical and petrochemical industries, TALKE continues to grow during this period. In the midst of these exciting times, Armin Talke Sr. joins the family business in 1968 at the age of 26.

Soon after, TALKE faces a strategic decision that will shape the face of the company to this day: The original company site in the center of Hürth is completely built out by 1970. In contrast, Kalscheuren, which at that time is still outside the city limits of Hürth, offers space for further growth. After long negotiations with the city, construction work finally begins on Max-Planck-Strasse.

Kalscheuren becomes TALKE's new headquarters

The completion of construction work marks the beginning of the relocation of TALKE's headquarters, which is completed in 1973. Among the major advantages in Kalscheuren are the company's own filling and storage capacities. In addition, the company has a dedicated truck workshop here. The foundation for further growth with our customers and even better service is laid.

A striking example of this growth is the TALKE site in Stade. Built from 1972 onwards, it coincides with a new Dow Chemical plant. Thanks to the chemical producer's order, TALKE is now also represented near the northern German Hanseatic city of Hamburg. In the 1970s, the need for reliable special logistics for the chemical industry is again driven by the development of new, innovative materials.

Röhm GmbH, for example, produces the rigid foam polymethacrylimide (PMI). The material is highly resistant to thermoforming, resistant to permanent vibration and is characterized by high rigidity. To date, it is used primarily in aircraft and automotive construction as well as in medical technology.

Ludwigshafen and the development of intermodal logistics

Due to the rapid development of the industry, it is becoming increasingly important for TALKE to have a direct presence at customers' sites in other chemical regions as well. One of these locations is Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Today, the city is the headquarters of BASF and the center of one of the world's largest chemical sites. In order to strengthen its own presence with the southern German chemical industry at an early stage, TALKE therefore puts a new logistics center, including a high-silo facility, into operation in Ludwigshafen in 1974.

After Hürth and Düsseldorf, Ludwigshafen becomes TALKE's third site on the Rhine. The immediate proximity to one of the busiest waterways in the world is no coincidence. For the chemical industry in the Rhineland in particular, the port of Cologne-Niehl is becoming an increasingly important transhipment point for liquid chemicals. Alfred Talke Sr. recognizes this and in 1975 secures the perfect connection to shipping with his own logistics center. The site also has its own rail siding.

This lays the foundation for intermodal transport services such as the transshipment of tankers to tank trucks or containers. The family business itself also continues to grow: Norbert Talke, brother of Armin Talke senior, also joins the company at the age of 27.
